Overview

The Department of Arabic Language and Media was established in 2008 AD, according to a new vision that combines the Arabic language and media, within the framework of one program, according to which the student is granted a bachelor’s degree that qualifies him to work in two tracks, or in two fields; The field of education, and the field of media in its various fields.

 

    The department includes seven full-time teachers and several part-time teachers in the fields of language and media, in addition to two technicians who work as media supervisors in the radio and television studio.

Since its establishment, the department has been keen to contract with distinguished expertise and competencies in the fields of media and the Arabic language, which enhances its mission.

 

     The number of students in the department ranges from 170 to 200 students, and they are often awarded a bachelor's degree after successfully passing (134) credit hours. The department aspires to develop their linguistic, literary and media capabilities, and qualify them to work in the fields of education and media.

Vision

.The program's vision is rooted in raising the student's proficiency in the Arabic language. The language of religion and Arabism on the one hand, and the official language of the State of Palestine on the other hand. It seeks to meet the needs of the local community and provide it with distinguished professional competencies in the fields of media and education in a manner consistent with the vision of modern and interactive education.

Mission

Since its inception, the department has sought to convince the local community of the feasibility of combining the Arabic language and media within the framework of one program, through which a common interest will be achieved for both the graduate and the educational and media institutions that benefit from his experiences and abilities in all fields of work.

Goals

The department, through its vision and mission, aims to achieve the following goals:

  • Graduating qualified and specialized media professionals in the field of journalism, radio and television, in order to support media institutions in Palestine and meet their needs for specialized staff.
  • The department aspires to be a cultural, cognitive and media center, and a link between media institutions on the one hand, and the local community on the other, by studying the community’s needs, desires and reactions to media performance and the media message.
  • Strengthening cooperation with the local community and developing relationships and communications to serve the university’s mission.

     

  • Developing the media profession, organizing the process of continuing education and applied media study, and raising the level of media competence of media officials in state departments and institutions. 

     

  •  Developing teaching staff as well as preparing teachers, as well as academics specialized in the media: (press, radio and television, public relations, new media...etc.).

 

  • Participate in developing the media and journalism sector in the State of Palestine, by providing the media field and strengthening its workers with qualified media capabilities.

     

  • Striving to advance the media profession, through committed scientific and practical qualification based on the preparation of media professionals committed to transparency, credibility, objectivity, and professional ethics.

     

  •  Teaching students the ethics and standards of the journalism profession, and introducing them to the system of laws regulating the media.

Career of Graduates

 

  • Working in various educational positions: (educational mentor, teacher, library supervisor...etc.).
  • Working as a linguistic auditor in press and media institutions.
  • Exercising the function of editor, editorial secretary, managing editor or editor-in-chief; The department's policy and the training it provides in eleven courses aim to qualify graduates to be competent editors and communicators capable of placing the communication message within an appropriate linguistic template and in a professional manner.
  • Working as a comprehensive journalist (producing editor), and this is consistent with the desire of media organizations to reduce the cost of production on the one hand, and their reliance on competent staff on the other hand.
  •  Working in institutions with mass communication activity, such as: ministries, media institutions, governmental and non-governmental associations, political parties, unions, and security services.
  • Working as a comprehensive journalist (producing editor), and this is consistent with the desire of media organizations to reduce the cost of production on the one hand, and their reliance on competent staff on the other hand.
  • Working in the field of marketing and advertising, especially with regard to investment, financial and profit-making institutions, small and large commercial companies, and to promote factory products.
  •  The program gives the graduate the opportunity to continue his master’s and doctoral degrees in various fields of Arabic language and literature, as well as in various fields of media, communication, public relations, and digital media without the need for remedial subjects. The department's steps were designed to achieve this goal.
  • Working as a field reporter, students learn the skills of preparing reports, using mobile phones in field work, photojournalism and television photography, and occupational safety.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students should be equipped with comprehensive knowledge, skills, and abilities to excel in their endeavors.

Qualifying students graduating from the university to possess the qualifications of a comprehensive journalist and an accomplished productive editor, in line with the needs of the local and global labor market.

Giving the student the ability to practice journalism, teaching, and scientific research competently and competently.

Enabling graduate students to carry out their job duties competently, whether in the field of education or media work, in a manner commensurate with the rapid developments in the fields of communication and the media industry.

 

Meeting the need of media organizations for graduates with high competence to carry out the tasks of a communicator professionally and in a modern manner that emulates advanced experiences at the world level. Here the importance of the section emerges; It provides a qualitative addition represented by the graduate’s ability to carry out editorial tasks in its comprehensive fields, including - also - linguistic aspects.

Qualifying graduate students at the Arab American University to represent a qualitative addition to the institutions in which they work, especially at the level of leading cultural and creative work in educational institutions and leading school radio on the one hand, and presenting modern thinking to the media institutions they join, which directly contributes to encouraging creativity and intellectual and cultural communication to achieve linguistic development and media modernization.

Providing students with a set of skills that enhance the process of their involvement in the labor market and their interaction, and enabling them to employ the Arabic language in media discourse, and employ media technologies to serve and develop the language, by providing them with the linguistic skills necessary for media discourse; Oral and written.
