
The University of Vigo in Spain, through the Atlantic Research Center for Communications Technology, has hosted Dr. Majdi Owda, Dean of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at the Arab American University, and holder of the “UNESCO Chair in Data Science for Sustainable Development,” to deliver a lecture entitled “Open Science for Sustainable Development.” ".
In his lecture, Dr. Owda touched upon the importance of open science in sustainable development, as he presented an international perspective on the collaborative efforts needed to confront global challenges. Dr. Owda also discussed the main areas of open science and the relevant impactful parties.
“Open science is not limited to academic communities and academic publications in open source journals and conferences, but also includes various scientific fields such as: open source libraries, and various effective parties in society starting from primary school students and their use of open source educational resources to major actors in the broader society such as governments, agencies, and local community institutions that must adopt an open science policy”, Dr. Owda said.
Moreover, he touched upon the UNESCO recommendation on open science, its goals and importance, as well as the need for global cooperation to achieve it. He also focused on the regional and global priorities for moving to open science environments in order to achieve sustainable development.
At the end of the lecture, Dr. Owda highlighted the challenges facing the world at the international level to ensure that various countries work in a balanced manner and to ensure cooperation in this important field.
