What will I learn

  • Core GIS Concepts: Learn the fundamentals of GIS, including surveying, mapping, coordinate systems, remote sensing, and image processing.

  • Cartography and Visualization: Master cartographic principles, map design, digital cartography, and advanced visualization techniques like 3D mapping and thematic maps.

  • Spatial Data Management: Acquire skills in managing geospatial data, working with geodatabases, and understanding spatial data formats, storage, and acquisition.

  • Spatial Analysis and Modeling: Perform spatial and geostatistical analysis, including overlay, buffer, network analysis, and advanced modeling for solving spatial problems.

  • GIS Software and Automation: Gain proficiency in tools like ArcGIS and QGIS, and learn programming (Python, SQL) to automate tasks and build GIS applications.

  • GIS Applications: Apply GIS in diverse fields such as urban planning, environmental management, health, hydrology, and emergency response.

  • Capstone and Ethical Practices: Complete a practical project to apply GIS knowledge in real-world scenarios, emphasizing project management and ethical considerations.

How will I learn

Learning GIS can be achieved through various approaches, depending on your background, goals, and preferred learning style. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to learn GIS:

1. Understand the Basics of GIS

Start by familiarizing yourself with the basic concepts of GIS, such as:

  • What GIS is and its components (hardware, software, data, and people).
  • The types of spatial data (raster and vector).
  • GIS applications in different fields.
  • Coordinate systems and projections.
  • Databases skills, geodatabases principals and concepts.

2. Choose GIS Software

To practice and learn, our students use several GIS software. Some popular options include:

  • Esri ArcGIS: Widely used, feature-rich, but often requires a paid license (student and trial licenses are available).
  • QGIS: Free and open-source. Ideal for beginners and professionals alike.
  • Google Earth Engine: Good for environmental and remote sensing projects.
  • GRASS GIS: Another open-source tool with a strong focus on spatial analysis.
  • GeoDa : for geo statistics and spatial data mining.

Most of the GIS courses in AAUP are managed to include theoretical and practical parts , in order  to implement and apply the methods, functions and practical solutions and decisions.
