Overview

Nurses working in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) worldwide share common goals of providing high quality care and promoting healthy outcomes for high-risk newborns and their families. There are wide differences across the globe, however, in the specific challenges that NICU nurses face in meeting these common goals and in the ways in which nursing care is provided to address these challenges. Neonatal nurses have much to learn from such program.

The Neonatal Nurse Master Program prepares nurses as expert providers of health care to neonates and their families across health care settings. The primary focus of the program is to prepare the graduate to promote, maintain, supervise and restore health, identify health risks, and assess, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic illnesses. The ability to function as an educator, leader, consultant, advocate, and change agent is an essential to the development evidence base knowledge and clinical expertise in this role.

Goals

  • Synthesize advanced knowledge in neonatal nursing to provide high quality of care provided to healthy and high-risk neonate.

  • Equip students with advanced clinical skills and evidence based practices necessary to improve quality care for critically ill neonates.

  • Provide students with tools needed for conducting scientific research, health promotion, disease prevention, and safe neonatal nursing care.

  • Prepare students to use team work, quality care principles, and effective leadership for the advancement of patient centered care in neonatal care settings.

  • Prepare compassionate, legally, and ethically responsive neonatal nurses who can provide high quality neonatal nursing services.

  • Strengthen the student’s abilities to utilize current and emerging healthcare technologies, and information systems in the evaluation of neonatal health care services.

The field of neonatal care is growing rapidly and receiving considerable attention as part of the development and improvement of healthcare delivery globally.

Neonatal nurses are nurses who work in neonatal medical facilities, such as NICUs, with other medical professionals. Graduate of this master program in neonatal nursing can possess adequate knowledge and advance to care for neonates.

Professionals with a Master’s in neonatal nursing have several career paths that may include:

  • Clinical Supervisor in NICUs with different levels.

  • Director of NICU at hospital.

  • Clinical Registered nurse in Neonatal Intensive Care Nurseries, Well Baby Nurseries and High Risk Follow Up.

  • Academic – serve as a teaching as well as a clinical instructor in nursing colleges.

  • Clinical researcher. / academician for undergraduate students.

  • Health care planning.

Upon completion of this program, students should be equipped with comprehensive knowledge, skills, and abilities to excel in their endeavors.

Integrate advanced knowledge and skills, grounded in the sciences, to interpret diagnostic test data and formulate differential diagnoses and appropriate clinical interventions.

 

Formulate and execute plan of care based on physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, appropriate health assessment and evidence based guidelines.

 

Evaluate and manage high risk newborns using clinical reasoning and problem solving skills in the provision of holistic and high quality neonatal care.

 

Apply ethical principles pertaining to withholding of clinical care, confidentiality of patient information, informed consent and other clinical practices.

 

Advocate for neonate and families to provide cost-effective, culturally evidence-based, ethical, quality care in and across health care settings.

 

Demonstrate effective communications skills, and engage in collaborative intra and inter-professional relationships efforts, to improve health care delivery and outcomes.

 

Exhibit leadership, effective management strategies and exceptional use of information technology resources to ensure proficiency of neonatal care.

 

Translate research into practice through activities that reflect critical appraisal of existing evidence, development of evidence-based practice, and evaluation of outcomes.

 

 Analyze healthcare data using statistical tools and informatics systems and interpret the results.
