About Program

Overview

Cancer is the second leading cause of death among Palestinian population, and with an estimated incidence increase between 2.5- 24% annually since 2010. Nurses play an important role in the provision high quality care to cancer patients as well as risk reduction, service coordination, and health promotion. Palestine witness a severe shortage of qualified oncology nurses in both private and public sectors. This shortage is expected to be deepened in the midst of increasing cancer incidence and the establishment of new oncology centers. The shortage in specialized and qualified oncology nursing staff, as well as unstructured training programs, are challenges to improving cancer care in Palestine (Halahleh & Gale, 2018).

This proposed master program in Oncology and Palliative care nursing at AAUP is expected to provide exceptional oncology nurses who will be capable to fill the gaps and meet the oncology and palliative health care needs in Palestine.

Goals

Prepare future leaders with in depth knowledge and skills who can influence health policy and improve oncology health care delivery system.
Integrate advanced knowledge of nursing and related disciplines to provide comprehensive oncology and palliative care.
Promote understanding of oncology and palliative, care and the role of oncology nurse in the health care settings to enhance diseases prevention and health promotion.
Provide students with the tools needed for critical thinking and analytical processes in the implementation of safe, ethical oncology services.
Strengthen student’s ability to conduct research, scholarly activities, and evidence-based practice related to oncology nursing practice.

Use advanced knowledge in pathophysiology, health assessment, and pharmacology oncology to influence oncology care services at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

Demonstrate competent skills in the care of oncology patients and their families’ through-out the disease process.

Implement holistic care approach for cancer patients including the use of bio psychosocial model in health care.

Demonstrate advance skills in research utilization and evidence-based practice in cancer genetics and pharmacogenomics in the care of oncology patients.

Exhibit leadership, ethical behaviors, attitudes, and exceptional communication skills to influence policy changes, and service delivery.

Appraise decision making and critical thinking in the provision of high-quality oncology and palliative nursing care.

Identify risk factors for cancer and describe approaches for prevention, screening, early detection and health promotion and Demonstrate competency in safe administration of cancer therapies necessary to manage adverse reactions to treatment.
